GFC – Three words: Grand Funk Seinfeld. This is a song about nothing and everything at once with a beat, riff and mood that recalls the blues-rock of the early to mid 70's that you simply can't resist blaring in the car. Seriously, if you haven't upped the volume (and miles-per-hour) by the 2:30 mark then I fear you may be dead inside.

JJR – I wrote this song in a completely different manner than anything in my prior catalog. Long story long, I keep a “riff library” on my phone of musical ideas I have anytime I sit down with a guitar, a piano, etc. Early in the recording progress, I was reviewing said riff library while on a cross-country flight and came across the chord progressions that would eventually become the hook of “Freeway.” While walking up the jet bridge, I saw various business travelers waiting for their bags and the chorus about “waiting in line” just fell from the sky. Though the song is by no means “deep” and I am not at all offended by the above comparisons to a Larry David sitcom, I would say I did my best to use driving as a metaphor for being disappointed in the actions of those around you who never seem to want to “yield anymore.”

CCL – Some great partnerships are born in wartime, some in the heat of the laboratory or an entrepreneurial haze…for CCL and JJR, it was in the multigen dubbed-cassette mud of Appetite For Destruction in the fifth grade. Much rock would ensue over the years, but it wasn’t until this track that the two would unleash a dual-guitar, stereo-split axe attack tributizing Izzy and Slash of yore to, ahem, steer your ears through the roundabout. It’s also the first time a fly on the studio wall would catch the two backing-vocaling into the same mike a la the gentlemen of Queen or the bards of the Beatles. Cause we’re just like the Beatles now.

Lyrics

The Freeway Took a Toll on Me

It’s a right on red world
Four way stops make my head swirl
I wish more lefts were protected
The power belongs to the horn
Anonymous, passive aggressive scorn
And no one yields anymore

I’ve been waiting in line
And most of the time
I don’t know who’s in front
I’ve been biding my time
And after all this while
I doubt I want what’s in front

Next time they cut my brake wires
Please be sure to shoot out the tires
Or I’ll use another sedan to crash stop
Going 5 over with my cruise control
Drafting off a car who seems to know where to go
Until the traffic circle blows my mind

I’ve been waiting in line
And most of the time
I don’t know who’s in front
I’ve been biding my time
And after all this while
I doubt I want what’s in front

This freeway took a toll on me

I’ve been waiting in line
And most of the time
I don’t know who’s in front
I’ve been biding my time
And after all this while
I doubt I want what’s in front

This freeway took a toll on me
